WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT BATS
Austin’s bat colony is cool — until they’re in your attic.
Most bat issues in Austin homes are Mexican free-tailed bats — the same species
that famously roosts under the Congress Avenue Bridge. Here’s what makes bat
exclusion different from every other animal we handle.
What you’ll notice
Signs of bats
Guano piles in attic corners — bat droppings are dark, dry, and crumble easily. Different from rat droppings (softer, oval-shaped)
Sharp ammonia smell — urine and guano in insulation, gets stronger in summer heat
Sounds at dusk — bats leave the roost in waves at sunset, especially May through October. Flapping, chittering as they exit
Brown staining around gaps — oils on bat fur leave dark marks at 1/2-inch+ entry points where they squeeze in and out
Why bats are different
Legal & seasonal nuance
Extermination is illegal in Texas. Bats are protected. Killing them or using poison is a state and federal offense — exclusion is the only legal option
One-way exclusion doors — bats fly out at dusk through a temporary device, can’t get back in. The humane, legally compliant method
Entry points are tiny. Bats can enter through gaps as small as 1/2 inch — gable vents, dormer flashing, where roof meets fascia. Sealing means finding every one
Hearing or seeing any of this? Tap to call —
we’ll inspect, identify the species, and time the exclusion legally around the season.

“I highly recommend Texas Rodent. They were professional, honest, and easy to communicate
with from start to finish. We had rats getting into our attic, and they found every entry
point, sealed everything up, and handled the whole process humanely. They explained
everything clearly and never tried to push us into a long-term contract. We haven’t had a
single issue since. Definitely give them a call!”

“I can honestly say I highly recommend Texas Rodent. The guys were so professional and
communicative. I had an issue with squirrels and a raccoon getting in my attic and they
humanely relocated them and sealed everything up. No more problems! There was no pressure
to sign any type of contract etc like I’ve experienced with other companies. Definitely
call them. They are on it!”

“Texas Rodent did an amazing job. We had squirrels getting into one of our rental
properties, and their team showed up quickly, communicated well, and took care of the
problem the right way. They humanely removed the animals, sealed the access points, and
made sure we understood what was done. No pressure, no upselling, just solid work. I’d
definitely recommend them to anyone dealing with rodents or wildlife.”
